Recommended Tips for Patients After Refractive Surgery

The process of corneal healing in the early postoperative period may be accompanied by tearing and stinging. Visual acuity may be changed (away or up close depending on lighting conditions) for two weeks. The final stabilization of the refractive effect and twilight vision will happen in an average of 2-3 months, depending on the exact implementation of the surgeon’s recommendations.

What do you need to be cautious about after refractive surgery (LASIK)?

There is a slight danger in the postoperative period due to the possibility of accidental eye injury when there is a displacement of the corneal flap. In order to avoid (prevention) of such trauma, the patient is recommended to wear glasses during the first month use (Sunglasses, tinted/untinted, with/without UV protection). You should protect your eyes from any rubbing or flying objects. You should limit contact with pets (cats, dogs, etc.), and with young children.

For 1-1.5 months after surgery the patient is not recommended to:

Visit baths, swimming pools, saunas, gyms, etc

Take long baths

Take picnics in areas with lots of trees

Long-distance travel or an abrupt change of climate

Drinking alcohol, and eating smoked, salted and spicy products.

Also, the patient should limit their participation in contact sports (boxing, wrestling, martial arts) that dangerous with regard to possible eye injury, for a longer term (one year). In some cases such as with those that have a high degree of myopia, this is recommended for life.

Visual load at close distances (reading, computer)

Shortsighted patients should limit their visual load in the first two weeks after surgery. From the third week the patient may increase their visual load at a near distance (reading, computer), with frequent pauses and with a gradual increase in the duration of visual loads and reduced delays. Also from the third week, it is possible to use glasses - training simulators (relaxing spectacles) according to instructions.

Different levels visual load is recommended for farsighted patients from the first days after surgery.

Driving

In the first month you should avoid driving for your own security, since during the postoperative period your eyes and brain are still adaptating to new optical conditions and you may experience some situations such as altered visual acuity, field of view, and trouble with assessing the sizes of objects and distances between them. You should not open the car window while driving, or to direct fans to your face to protect your eyes against dust.

During the night it is possible that you may experience glares, halos, bright circles of the headlights of an oncoming car and around the direct light sources.

Remember that at Boothe Eye Care Center, our consultants are always happy to provide you with information. If you have a concern after surgery, please contact Dr. Boothe at (214) 328 - 0444.

We are able to view the world around us because of light. Light rays enter your eye and create the image of the observed objects on the retina. Our brain then uses these images to create sensations that we call vision.

The eye as an optical system

Our eye is a complex optical device, which is often compared to a camera. The cornea and lens are two collecting lenses (optical power with about 40 and 20 diopters, respectively). The camera lens serves to collect light rays coming from the object photographed, and they focus on the photosensitive matrix device to obtain a clear image. This is pretty much how our eyes work.

In the eye, both the cornea and lens must focus the rays precisely on the retina to produce clear images of distant objects. For this purpose the length of the eye (from the pupil to the retina) must exactly match the optical power of the eye in general (cornea + lens). If compliance is disrupted for any reason, the rays will be collected either in front of the cornea, or after it. The image on the retina will be blurred. Distorted images are caused when the surface of the cornea or lens is not spherical. All of these distortions of the image on the retina of the eye are so-called refractive errors (defects).

Popular Refractive Errors

Myopia occurs if rays focus mostly in front of the retina. This can happen for two reasons: either the length of the eye more than the norm (about2.15 cm), or normal length of the eye (or rather at the cornea) has too much refractive power (greater than +40 D).

If, on the contrary, the rays are going behind the retina, we are dealing with hyperopia. Hyperopia occurs when the length of the eye is shorter than the norm or if the normal length of the eye has too little refractive power. This is the opposite of myopia. With hyperopia you can see far off objects clearly because of your eyes’ ability to increase its overall optical power by means of voltage adjustment (increase of the refractive power of the lens).. Another common refractive error is astigmatism. Astigmatism occurs when there is a violation of the spherical shape of the cornea (usually) or the lens (rarely). Astigmatism can be combined with myopia or hyperopia.

Lasik is a laser surgery that is used to correct refractive errors such as myopia (nearsightedness), hyperopia (hyperopia), and astigmatism. This method is now one of the most promising methods of vision correction, precisely and accurately obtaining optimal results.

If you want to take a vision examination, come to the Boothe Eye Care & Laser Center. Here you will find that our staff is friendly and knowledgeable. Dr. Boothe will be happy to help you determine the quality of your vision and suggest appropriate treatment if necessary.

Did you know that each second, a case of blindness is caused by lack of substances that are not synthesized by the body and are exclusively obtained with food?
Every moment the human body is faced with a variety of environmental factors. Light and sound affects us, temperature and humidity, the food that we eat and our lifestyle. Each body has its own function, and their “occupational hazard”. For example, one of the most harmful condition for the eye is light. It does not matter if it is natural sunlight or artificial light.

Any light is harmful to the eye: the light rays falling on the retina and destroying its photoreceptors, rods and cones. These special cells convert light into nerve impulses, which then goes to the brain, where visual images are formed. Since birth, a person is given a huge strategic reserve of 7 million cones and 120 million rods, which allow them to see both day and night. However, their number declines steadily under the influence of light that, over time, causes loss of vision and in some cases threatens with blindness.

Also, the rods and cones are destroyed by free radicals. These aggressive molecules are formed under the influence of bright light in the retina and lens. They cause a violation in capillary permeability, reducing the transparency of the lens and causing irreversible damage to the cells of the retina. Such “damage” can accumulate and cause a progressive decrease in visual acuity and the development of age-related changes in the eye (glaucoma, cataracts, and macular degeneration).

The formation of free radicals in the tissues of the eye occurs under the influence of constant exposure to light, regardless of what you are doing.

The mechanism of eye protection from damaging effects
No wonder nature has provided a mechanism for us to protect our eyes from the damaging effects of light rays. For the proper functioning of the antioxidant system of the eye there are responsible natural pigments carotenoids – lutein and zeaxanthin. They are accumulated in the retina and the lens, and create a natural filter that absorbs most harmful light rays such as ultraviolet.
Lutein is ingested with food only, but it is not synthesized in the body. Zeaxanthin is formed from lutein in the tissues of the eye. At first glance, every day you should have 5 mg lutein and 1 mg zeaxanthin. However, to provide such amounts of lutein from food you should consume at least a half-kilo of carrots, a pound of pepper, or about 250 grams of spinach. The daily diet is able to compensate for the almost one-third of the daily requirements of carotenoids, so nutraceutical supplementation is vital for maintaining healthy eyes.

How do you choose the right vitamin supplements for the eyes?
First, you must undergo a full vision examination. You can have this done at Boothe Eye Care Center where special equipment and the latest technology are used. Remember that only a specialist can determine which treatment you need your eyes. Dr. William Boothe has vast experience and he is always happy to help you correct your vision so you can see clearly.

Laser surgery makes it possible to correct refractive errors of vision. This is a reliable, fast and easy way to get rid of glasses and/or contact lenses. Almost any eye refractive error can be corrected by this procedure. Boothe Eye Care & Laser Center is a leader in the development of refractive eye surgery, and above all, it is a leader in the use of advanced technologies relevant to the safety of this procedure. A great number of surgical techniques for refractive surgery has been developed and used until laser keratomileusis (Lasik),or surgery on the cornea of the eye has become a leading method for carrying out this operation. This is because Lasik provides the quickest and best result.

During the process of IntraLasik procedure a thin cornea flap is formed on the eye. Then the cornea is corrected underneath the flap. Before, a mechanical device was used to cut a flap onto the cornea. The new method of IntraLasik does not involve blades and the corneal flap is formed by a Femtosecond laser.

The correction of the cornea using an excimer laser
Errors of eye refraction are corrected by laser surgery, using an excimer laser on the cornea under the flap. The excimer laser radiates invisible ultraviolet light into cornea of the eye at a wavelength of 193 nanometers. The laser beam opens up the molecular bonds and vaporizes corneal tissue. Refractive errors of the eye are corrected by polishing the cornea and changing the shape of its surface with a laser beam. The beam does not burn, does not hurt, and does not reduce the mobility and durability of the cornea. During refractive laser eye surgery it is used for only a few seconds while maintaining the natural elongated shape of the eye.

Who is suitable for laser eye surgery?
Laser refractive eye surgery is particularly suitable for the correction of nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism. Also, it is also possible to correct presbyopia. Surgery that corrects eye refraction errors is planned for each individual client. Before the operation you must undergo a series of visual examinations. Then Dr. William Boothe will choose the best laser program and plan the entire course of the procedure depending on the individual needs of the patient.

99% of people with myopia (nearsightedness) and more than 80% of patients with hyperopia (farsightedness) who underwent laser surgery between 2002 and 2005 got rid of the need for glasses and/or contact lenses. After the initial consultation Dr. William Boothe will give the patient all the information and proper eye care about the expected results on an individual basis. We are looking forward to hearing from you! Call us at (214) 328 – 0444.

Contact lenses or laser surgery?
Eye disease is a scourge of modern society. Today, according to statistics, various visual impairments affect roughly one in three people on earth. The most common eye problems are nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism. If you suffer from vision impairment of 1.5 diopters, then you may choose not to undergo laser eye surgery.

To answer this question, you can consult with Dr. William Boothe from Boothe Eye Care & Laser Center. He explains what are the advantages and disadvantages of contact lenses and laser eye surgery. Dr. Boothe will discuss the entire procedure and how the structure of the eye will be effected. He explains that in order to have good vision, the focal point of the optical system of the eye should be on the retina. If the focal point is behind the retina, the person will suffer from farsightedness, if the focal point is before the retina, the person will experience shortsightedness.

People suffering from visual impairments have dealt with visual corrections with the help of lenses. These corrective lenses include glasses or contact lenses. However, in 1949 the Colombian ophthalmologist Jose Barrakuer proposed the revolutionary idea of vision correction. According to his method of improving vision, the cornea or natural lens of the eye are the components that should undergo correction. In 1985, in Berlin there was organized the first corrective laser eye surgery.

What are the benefits of contact lenses?
The benefit is that the doctor does not interfere with the structure of the eye. Instead artificial, external lens are used in order to correct the eyes poor refraction of light. The benefits of using such a method are that the contact lens are removable, yet wear snugly against the eye, ensuring maximum comfort and visual acuity.

What are the advantages of laser correction?
Laser vision correction is a very safe vision correction method. However the advantages of laser vision correction is the benefit of having a lifetime of perfect vision without the utilization of any external visual aids. An example of how quick and painless the procedure is that you can come in for a surgery and would see results the very next day.

If you want to learn more advantages of laser surgery for vision correction, you can call us. Our phone: (214) 328 – 0444.

How to Protect Your Eyes from Ultraviolet Radiation
We have long been accustomed to sun protection products for the body such as cosmetics, lotions and sunglasses. We have no doubt of their necessity. But that’s not enough to protect your eyes from ultraviolet rays. We are talking about lutein and zeaxanthin that are the most important substances that are received from food. Or rather is almost not received, because even the most balanced menu of the average urban dweller does not have the amount needed on a daily basis.

Any light, whether it be natural sunlight or artificial, affects vision. Under the influence of an ultraviolet in the retina and lens free radicals are produced that destroy the “sticks” and “cones” which are photoreceptors through which we see during the day and night.

Fortunately, nature has provided protection. Most of the ultraviolet rays slows down the formation of pigment of the retina, which includes lutein and zeaxanthin. These substances are not produced in the body, and come only with food. With their lack of natural filter (pigment) it ceases to protect the eyes from the damaging effects of light.
Vigilance of long-livers

Dr. William Boothe states if any person around 100-years old sees no worse than when in his youth, he must be living in the mountains. They lay down to sleep with the sunset and do not sit behind a computer all day. However, townspeople cannot say the same.We have to work all day and we are much more saturated with light, and the strain on the eyes exceeds the acceptable rate several times. Accordingly, lutein and zeaxanthin are greater spent. As a result, after 40 years, many begin to wear glasses because they developed age-related macular degeneration (AMD) – a condition leading to blindness.Currently there is no way to restore human vision lost as a result of AMD and atrophy of the optic nerve. Therefore it is necessary as soon as possible to do everything possible to stop the disease process. To maintain good vision your daily intake with food should be 5 mg of lutein and 1mg zeaxanthin. Such amount is contained in 250 grams of spinach, 0.5 kg of sweet peppers, or 1 kg of carrots. The usual diet contains less than 20% of normal.

To protect your eyes from the damaging effects of light rays, it is necessary to take additional lutein. What should be the choice? Nutrients must be fully absorbed – otherwise they are useless. And this important property is determined by production technology.

If it is only necessary for the job, you should always use glasses. This relieves pressure on the eye, improves the quality of labor, and creates a sense of comfort. If you need to wear glasses all the time, pick up a modern frame.

If there is a high degree of data pathologies and there is a need for treatment, it is necessary to use all necessary means to prevent a further reduction of vision. In order to determine any abnormalities of vision, you should contact Dr. William Boothe. Boothe Eye Care & Laser Center is created for people who care about their vision and desire to improve it. Therefore, please contact us for advice: (214) 328 04 44.

Food for Eyes

Like your body, your eyes appreciate the benefits of healthy eating. Learn about foods and nutrients that are needed for shiny and healthy eyes! Dr. William Boothe can explain what do you need to eat to keep your eyes healthy?

An important condition for the preservation and maintenance of your eyes is proper nutrition. To do this, you should follow three principles: moderation in eating, food is digestible and high supplementation of foods rich in vitamins A, E and C.

Vitamin defect in our days is typical for most people. In order to prevent diseases of the eye, the body requires certain vitamins, which are mentioned above.
Vitamin A (carotene)

This substance helps to keep eyes healthy by preventing development of night blindness. And perhaps, it is the most important component for healthy eyes. Half a carrot a day will provide to you the daily-recommended value of vitamin A. Other products that are rich in vitamin A are cod-liver oil, sweet potato, liver, and the pulp of a gray Californian nut.

Vitamin C
This water-soluble vitamin is present in most tissues of the body and is extremely important for the eyes. As a powerful antioxidant, it destroys harmful free radicals and protects cells by preventing certain diseases of the eye. This valuable vitamin is found in lemons, oranges, grapefruits and their juices, strawberries, raw green peppers, tomatoes and cauliflower.

Vitamin E
Just like vitamin C, this fat-soluble vitamin is a powerful antioxidant that protects the eyes from diseases such as cataracts and age-related macular degeneration. Vitamin E is found in almonds, sunflower and corn oil, mango, hazelnuts, pistachios, and peanuts.

Carotenoids
Carotenoids are natural plant pigments that determine the color of fruits and vegetables. Lutein and zeaxanthin are just two of the many species that prevent the deterioration of vision and eye disease. Lutein is found in foods such as spinach, lettuce, cabbage, broccoli, fresh peas, and many yellow and orange fruits and vegetables. Zeaxanthin is found in orange peppers, corn and many kinds of leafy vegetables such as collard greens and spinach.

Zinc
This is an essential mineral that is responsible for the health of the organism and especially the health of the eye, and it is found in virtually every cell in our body. Zinc is found in many foods, including red meat, poultry, oysters, baked beans, yogurt, milk, cereal, and nut mixtures.

What products are harmful to your eyes?
1.	Products containing high levels of starch (potatoes), which increase insulin during the process of digestion.
2.	Abuse of foods rich in protein (meat) leads to cardiovascular disease, diabetes, diseases that affect the condition of the vessels.
3.	Baking and sweets violate production of insulin, which leads to brittleness of the eye capillaries.
4.	Coffee affects the blood supply to the eyes by narrowing the vessels.

If your vision is impaired and you want to learn how to improve vision, you can always contact the Boothe Eye Care & Laser Center, where you will pass a thorough research and quality treatment of vision.

What is Laser Eye Surgery?
Laser vision correction is the most modern, high-tech procedure that allows patients with problems of refraction (nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism) to fully restoresight and get rid of the need to use auxiliary methods of correction – glasses or contact lenses.Laser vision correction procedure is a safe, painless, not traumatic, and quick procedure- it only lasts a few minutes.
Safe, painless and quick recovery
The laser beam acts on the surface layer of the cornea to make the correction, thereby changing its optical power. The procedure is

Painless – using local anesthesia in the form of droplets, which are used before the procedure. You almost do not feel any discomfort during surgery
Fast – the operation takes about 10 minutes, 5 minutes per eye
Safe – modern equipment has an automatic tracking system, so if the patient moves their eye around, the result is not affected
Bloodless and seamless – scalpel is not used
Rehabilitation – does not require a long time. During Lasik, or IntraLasik the visual acuity significantly increased in the first hours after surgery
Stability of the result and confidence in the future

Laser vision correction is one way to improve vision, which allows the patient to once and forever get rid of wearing glasses or contact lenses. Since the operation changes the optical power of the surface of the eye, the effect of the operation itself is stable. It is therefore important that the laser surgery is carried out with stable vision (i.e. it has notchanged in recent years). Patients are the best proof of the stability and duration of the effect of the operation.

Huge Possibilities

Laser vision correction can correct high degrees of myopia and astigmatism, and improve vision in farsightedness.

In most cases it is possible to completely restore vision. In cases where laser surgery is contraindicated, Dr. William Boothe will consider other possible options for vision correction surgery. For example, implantation of phakic lenses or lens replacement can be a viable option. In any case, he always tries to do everything possible to achieve the maximum possible result. If you are more than 18 years of age (at this age the growth of the body ends, specifically the eyes) and less than 45 (in adulthood age-related changes occur in the eye), it’s time to think about the possibilities of modern medicine and allow yourself to lead an active life without constraint.

Schedule an Appointment

If you are going to visit our center, choose a date and time for your visit and make an appointment. To make an appointment, you just need to fill out a short online form with information on your chosen time of visit, as well as any concerns you have to Boothe Eye Care Center.

Boothe Eye Care & Laser Center is very popular among patients and visitors from other countries because Dr. William Boothe has a wide experience in laser eye surgery. He uses surgical skill and effective methods of treatment in order to help his patients be free of glasses or contact lenses.

Laser eye surgery has proved to be a highly accurate and safe approach to getting rid of your glasses or lenses. Accurate diagnosis is a guarantee of success. We should note that not everyone can get laser correction. In fact, success depends on how precisely identified indications and contraindications are for laser surgery. Dr. William Boothe is always glad to offer a wide range of therapeutic measures.
Laser vision correction is performed for patients aged 18 to 45 years who suffer from nearsightedness (myopia), farsightedness (hyperopia), astigmatism, presbyopia (age-sightedness) and other combinations. Before surgery, the patient will undergo a comprehensive three-hour diagnostic vision exam. During the eye exam you will work with the radiologist who will take a photo of your eye and will scan the cornea. Finally, Dr. Boothe will do complex check and determine the structure and thickness of the cornea, expand your pupils, check the eyeball, and measure the intraocular pressure and volume of the pupil.

Laser eye surgery is performed under local anesthesia by using anesthetic eye drops. In the first stage of surgery, Dr. Boothe precisely separates the top layer of the cornea. In the second stage, Dr. Boothe uses the laser and creates a new cornea shape. Laser surgery is painless and is carried out one eye at a time. Today, there are techniques that allow the surgery is performed on both eyes at the same time.

At Boothe Eye Center you are able to choose a method of treatment for each step of surgery that will meet your requirements. Today, IntraLasik is a more popular method, because it is a more accurate and safe method of laser correction. During the first step Dr. Boothe makes the incision on the cornea, and the corneal flap is created using a modern computerized IntraLase laser device. In the second stage a corneal excimer laser, which adapts to the individual parameters of the cornea eye, is used to reshape the cornea. Such customized treatment guarantees optimal results.
After the IntraLasik procedure your vision will stabilize more quickly than with any other methods of operation. It completely eliminates the risk associated with the use of a surgical knife. As result, accuracy and visual acuity is increased. This type of surgery is suitable even for those who in the past have been contraindicated for laser vision correction: patients with very wide pupils and with very thin corneas, and high degrees of myopia and astigmatism.

Very often before undergoing a medical option, we want to be fully informed and know that we chose the best solution. It is good to find out all pros and cons about a procedure in order to avoid the risks and complications. Lasik eye surgery includes many advantages and minor disadvantages. Everyone who is considering undergoing Lasik must weigh all the positives and negatives

Dr. Boothe of Boothe Eye Center has been performing LASIK for about 20 years. It is a special laser surgery that improves vision for people who suffer from hyperopia, myopia and astigmatism. Lasik procedure has a lot of benefits:

•	Patients who underwent the Lasik surgery immediately experienced great results.
•	Lasik is a very quick procedure. It takes less than 15 minutes to finish the entire procedure on borth eyes.
•	Laser eye surgery is painless. Before the Lasik procedure the nurse uses a special anesthetic drop that numbs your eye.
•	The postoperative period does not take much time. Most patients are able to go back to their normal activities the day after their surgery.
•	Due to Lasik, it is possible to restore peripheral eyesight, which is not possible with eyeglasses.
•	In most cases Lasik procedure is a final solution. You can forget about wearing glasses and contact lenses forever.
•	Dr. Boothe creates individual treatments, which affects the cost. Each patient of Boothe Laser Eye Center was satisfied with the reasonable cost of treatment.

If you are hesitant about whether or not you should undergo Lasik, visit Dr. William Boothe of Boothe Eye Center who will answer all your questions and help you decide if it is right for you.
